I have been using a Kobo Arc 10HD for over a year: 
http://www.cnet.com/products/kobo-arc-10-hd/ I chose it because it has a 
great screen for reading text, even if you don't use the Kobo e-Reader 
(which is top of the line).

At $180 you get pretty much the same features as Kindle HD10, although 
mine does not continue to update to newer versions of Android.  But I've 
never wanted to something with it that I couldn't do.
