Personally, I'm a fan of taking them apart and re-purposing the rare earth magnets, since they're great for craft projects for kids/etc. The platters themselves can then be either smashed or dealt with however you see fit, but there's a fair amount of material in there you can up-cycle. I've also had kids or friends with kids have fun using the controller boards as art projects. The chassis I then let go to scrap.
