I’ve never really used Windows 10. But if it works the way many other modern operating systems work, then one strategy would be to create a second administrative account on the computer with a password YOU know. Then you could use that account for slightly-less-complicated recovery. You might even be able to set it up for remote access so that you could fix it from afar. If I were admin’ing a machine (or if I had become the de-facto sysadmin) for a relative (who didn’t mind my having complete system access) then that’s what I’d do.
