Agreeing with Jan here: you're going to need to have your paperwork in order regardless of whether TurboTax asks you the questions or a human accountant asks you the questions. I used a local tax accountant a few years ago, and they had an online questionnaire. Basically the same questions as TurboTax, at about 20x the cost. Ever since, I'm a TT advocate (working from home, self-employed, drawing Social Security). TT Home and Business, yesiree. The fact that everything is saved for the following year's return is no small benefit, as Tom Adams suggests below. I would not recommend using online tools, but I do recommend using TurboTax. Home & Business for self employed and small business owners, Premier for everyone else. If you are at all knowledgeable about taxes and do your homework, it really isn't that difficult to do your own taxes, unless you have some very peculiar circumstances. But if you feel more comfortable having an accountant do them for you, you should do so. However, you should pay an accountant for his/her knowledge about the tax code, not for doing the work sifting through and organizing your data to file the returns. So it's definitely worth the $60-$80 it will cost to buy the appropriate version of TurboTax that you can use to organize your information as required and prepare a draft return with all the supporting documents your accountant will eventually need.
