I sent an email with an answer but I don't know if it was ever approved. The solution turned out to be that I had the wrong version of PHP installed. There was a bug in 5.3.3 which prevented drush from running. The solution was to upgrade to 5.4. The bug was mentioned here on this page and this was exactly the error I was getting: https://github.com/drush-ops/drush/issues/544 Thanks to everyone who offered help to me, I really appreciated it.
