[Hidden-tech] Question about Quark - InDesign conversion

Hi Julie
My experience is not recent, and also wasn’t cross-platform related, so others may have more precise information for you. But what I remember is that early versions of InDesign had a built-in conversion capability. After a while it wasn’t built-in any more and you had to buy the plugin.
The conversions were not “perfect” in that you still had to tweak the resulting layout, but you did wind up with all your graphics and text on the page. Compared to starting from scratch on a new layout, it would save a lot of time but you would still have to check all your links and alignments. If you have a one-shot project it would be the way to go. If you have, for example, a regular publication, you might be better off in the long run to make a new template.
More recently I used a conversion service to go from quark to InDesign and they had to save the quark file back several versions before they could make an InDesign file. It was helpful but some of the quark functionality didn’t make it into InDesign because of the version change. It wasn’t perfect, and if I were doing it on a regular basis I would buy the plugin, but for a one-shot it worked pretty well.
	Good luck!
	Lynne
