[Hidden-tech] Laptop repair advice

My bad—I forgot to mention Kiernan and Green Earth! Also great local resources. I have not done a lot of work with them but found quality advice, smart, creative thinking and affordable prices when I did.

Re: Left-Click: I tried for many months to retain an open mind with them, but the way they handled my “repair" and follow up has been worthy of report to the BBB—which I have not yet done. Essentially, I paid for an expedited service and for them to do a full system reinstall and data dump off and back onto the laptop, so I could have it for weeks out of country. They returned the laptop to me on time, and I was perfectly happy. Until I realized the laptop was actually no longer functional, after I was already en route out of country. Three visits to the Montreal Apple Store and a bunch of follow up with Apple Sr Reps by phone and the Holyoke Apple Store later, I finally was able to get the laptop working again—roughly 4 weeks later!

Semi-catastrophic—but you know, stuff happens sometimes, and I get it, so I was still somewhat open about Left Click. But my attempts to communicate with them to follow up on what hadn’t been done well—and to request a refund of the expediting and/or repair fee, given that there was no repair and instead of an expedited repair it turned into weeks of no working computer at all, was astonishingly tone deaf and poorly handled by them: promises of looking more deeply into my situation, promises of return calls, months and months going by, little to no communication beyond the occasional pledge to “look more deeply into it so we can respond fully” etc. I finally got to someone who I think was one of the owners or maybe senior managers, and after several rounds of back and forth over more weeks, they offered me what I felt was an almost insulting offer of some partial refund. When I replied in detail, and with full and proper civility, why I felt that was not a sufficient reply or offer, I just never heard from them again.

For my money, that is pathetic follow through under the circumstances. I will never advise anyone to go there, and I will warn people away from doing so, because of my experience of the past 9 months, still unresolved.

YMMV, but caveat emptor.
