What you are describing is a VLE(virtual learning environment) or LMS (learning management system). There are currently 8-10 of these in the market. They are designed to do what you are asking, for the reasons that you mentioned. Most are NOT free but few free programs are truly free.

Here are some names - I can give you more info offline if you would like. I do NOT represent any of these companies.

Schoology
Firefly
Moodle (open source and free)
edsby
Canvas

In addition there are school database companies that have LMS’s in their offerings, but probably not available standalone. These include Veracross, Blackbaud(WhippleHill) and Finalsite.
