[Hidden-tech] Fwd: Advice on Buying New MacBook

Timing the apple release cycle aside, simply max out the specs of
your chosen device, such that it will have the longest possible usable
lifespan. Obviously these machines are not meaningfully user-upgradable,
so in order to get the best bang for your buck, go as high end as you
can. That should effectively double the usable lifespan from 3 to 6
years. I too have an 2008 MBP, which I still occasionally utilize, but
picked up a 2012 MBP when the first retina displays started shipping. I
find the 2008 model still quite usable though. Still 8 years is a
remarkable lifespan for a laptop.
As for timing the release cycle, you'll always get burned trying to
do that. Buy the machine that best meets your current and anticipated
future functionality and performance goals, and just go with it. You'll
save yourself a lot of headaches. Hopefully these thoughts don't stand
too much at odds, but the fact is, you'll always be striving to achieve
that balance between performance and portability, within the constrains
of your work requirements. That's just how this market operates.

Best Regards,
Colin
