In this case all you really need is the proper cable and/or adaptor.  Is the 
desktop Mac an iMac or a MacMini?  If the former, things are not so easy, but 
what you *can* do (if both machines are on a network) is to 'share' the 
laptop's stream (somewhere in preferences there is sharing of things like the 
screen) and then fire up both machines and when logged into the desktop Mac, 
run the screen sharing program (whatever MacOS calls its version of vncviewer) 
and open the laptop's 'screen'.  If the desktop Mac is a MacMini, then you 
just unplug the monitor connection from the MacMini and plug it (with a 
suitable adaptor if needed) into the laptop.
