About your resume ...
There's a state-run job center called CareerPoint. The one I use is in Holyoke, but there are others. Google to find the locations. They help with all kinds of things - building a resume, interview skills, job search, etc. I can't tell you how good they are, but that might be a place to start. Their services are free. They sometimes have access to training programs that build a skill. From what I gather, the center tends to help those at the lower end of the education spectrum. But I might be wrong. Everyone is welcome to use their services.

I'm in the process of evaluating Insightly for our 300+ member
organization: https://www.insightly.com/index005/
So far, the free version looks very promising. I haven't put it into the
hands of our admin yet, so I don't know how it'll hold up under pressure,
but I'm encouraged.

Hey all,

I hesitate to ask this question, because I suspect that I am going to get a
lot of good answers -- more than I will know what to do with.

I have been self-employed for a while now. I have been keeping busy, but I
am looking for someone who can help me take my unformal history and
experience and turn it into a formal resume and letter of introduction.

Thanks for your help.

Ted

Jan Melnik does amazing things. I don't know how much she would charge, but
she's very talented and leads a lot of workshops throughout New England. And
a nice person, to boot!

You might consider getting in touch with local career agencies. I met the
guy who (at least at the time) ran this one in springfield:
http://www.futureworksjobs.org/ -- they offer this kind of service. Other
towns/cities likely have similar places.

It's a little out of the box depending on the work your client does, but
we've had some very positive reactions to http://nationbuilder.com/different

They used to have different flavors for different types of businesses
(nonprofit vs election campaign), but it looks like it's one-size-fits-all
now.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for an example or two of service providers who require potential clients to fill out a fairly long online questionnaire or application prior to even discussing an engagement.? This is partly a qualification technique, to make sure that the client is serious and also so the service provider can look at the questionnaire answers to make sure there's a good match.
I've seen various people doing this but can't find an example suitable for the article I'm writing.? I call it a "jump through hoops" strategy

Thanks for any leads on this!

I'm curious about Gmail power users out there. I'm starting to find more
and more important emails ending up in my Trash (Gmail) - skipping the
Inbox all together. Just moments ago, I found a very critical email from a
client who I regularly email with - sitting in my Trash folder in Gmail.

If you're a heavy Gmail user, is this common? I've been using Gmail for
years. But I'm starting to consider moving back to Apple mail or
Thunderbird.

Any simple way to retrain Gmail, so I don't have to constantly check the
Trash folder for important emails that Gmail has incorrectly identified as
trash?

Thoughts, suggestions?

Hi, Jeff.

1. Check your mail filters (under mail settings) - maybe you set a
filter that was too broad?
2. Check your junk mail settings - maybe you don't want to skip the
inbox, just mark the messages?

I find that many messages from Hidden-Tech are from users whose mail
messages or addresses are marked as junk by my spam utility. But my
spam utility doesn't run for my Gmail account - I find Gmail's spam
settings pretty solid.

Marcia,

I have seen something similar to this on the Unite Health Care website...
If you want to apply for one of their job postings, you have to go through some videos and questions more to do with "your person" than your qualifications. Not sure if this is what you are looking for?

that's odd... that hasn't happened to me before, but well, for starters you
should set up a filter to make sure that specific email automatically
always goes to your inbox. not sure how to direct possible new email
though... the filters are pretty powerful and might be your solution if you
play around with a little

Hi, Ted,

Under the business name Accurate Writing & More, I've been doing resumes
professionally in the Valley since 1981. I specialize in people with a
nontraditional work history and have done many for people who've been
self-employed.

To me, a resume is a marketing document; I do my best to present you as an
attractive candidate (while sticking absolutely to the truth). A
substantial portion of my resume work is repeat and referral. I have some
clients since thew 1990s who come in every 3 to 5 years when they're
changing jobs.

The main page for my resume services is
http://www.accuratewriting.com/resumephilosophy.shtml - and the special
page for Western Mass folks who can come to the office in person is
http://www.accuratewriting.com/wmass_resumes.shtml
