Not sure what you mean about online documents--documents embedded in a web page or viewed in Word when opened on a network? The former is better created in Google Docs, the latter may need you to press CTRL+click in order to jump to the right page. If you are creating a table of contents using Word, you'll want to use Heading styles to make the TOC generation much easier.
