Not sure what you mean about online documents--documents embedded in a web
page or viewed in Word when opened on a network? The former is better
created in Google Docs, the latter may need you to press CTRL+click in order
to jump to the right page. 

If you are creating a table of contents using Word, you'll want to use
Heading styles to make the TOC generation much easier. You can reply to me
off list if you want to go over what exactly you need.
