[Hidden-tech] How To Use A "New" Replacement iPhone

Happy New Year Folks!

I had no idea this would be difficult;
I was naive ...

I was just recently gifted an Apple
iPhone 4s in very good condition, in
a bid to replace another damaged &
heavily malfunctioning smartphone;
the service I use is T-Mobile, with a
month-to-month service plan rather
than a contract.

I don't KNOW who the former Carrier
for the iPhone was and the former owner
apparently doesn't either: she thinks
it was AT&T; it's been sitting in a drawer.

Naturally, when I inserted my T-Mobile
SIM card into the iPhone, it returned
an "Invalid Card" alert or some such ..

How do I go about solving this riddle
so I can use my newly acquired iPhone
with my current T-Mobile plan?

(T-Mobile was of no help, so far and
their customer service reps do not
have sufficient command of English!)

Thanks in advance ... :)
