Some clients will pay for the site software updates, some won't.

I've begun a practice of converting my old client Drupal sites that
aren't getting updated (e.g. Drupal 5) to flat HTML using WGET.
(https://www.drupal.org/node/27882) - this is what I just did to the
site that got SEO hacked with the viagra ads. Of course, it will take
time for Google's index to figure out that all those pages aren't there
anymore.

I appreciate hearing that those SEO Hacks end up costing the site in
organic search in the end once Google caught up. I've never recommended
doing the black hat SEO to my clients, but I did assume it worked!
Thank you, list.
