[Hidden-tech] Satellite Phone

There are some clever systems that use what's basically a cordless phone but they direct all the energy of the signal into a very narrow directional cone so the signal carries much further. You do need a reasonably clear line of sight to the base station, or at least you did when I used one up in Maine 25 years ago that reached a mile across the water and was generally quite reliable. The only problem we had was when an ice storm bowed the antenna down and we lost signal for a few hours until the ice melted. Here's a modern example of such a system: http://www.telephonemagic.com/voyager-long-range-wireless-phone-systems.htm . Since my experience is from so long ago I can't recommend a specific system. These remote telephone systems are popular with homesteaders and similar folks so if you are researching such a system check the places that cater to that audience.

Since it hooks into the regular telephone network calls made on such a system cost the same as a regular telephone rather than the dollars per minute you pay with a satellite telephone.

If that doesn't work I'd look into just laying a phone cable over the ground. Phone wire is not that expensive and since it's not carrying lots of electricity it's not dangerous. Build a little shack down at the start of the road and have the phone company run their wire to there, and then you take it from there.

For Internet you are probably looking at satellite Internet, but that's not that expensive. It's satellite telephones that are pricy, both in first cost and in cost per minute of use. Even if you had one it could only really be for emergency use.

Friends,

We have a small retreat center on a mountain-top in Shutesbury -- phone and net access are iffy at best.

Does anyone know about satellite phones or other (ideally inexpensive!) methods of getting better service in such places?

Cheers,

Ken
