[Hidden-tech] Cable Router

I purchased the same model (SB6141) and it works fine on Comcast. I even
noticed a speed boost since I was previously hitting the device's 24Mbps
limit.

Comcast recommends the newer DOCSIS 3.0 modems like that model. In fact,
a representative recently mentioned that they were going to phase out
the older DOCSIS 2.2 modems in the next 6 months. The newer versions are
also more resilient to interference because they use multiple data
channels and can work around problem frequencies.

As for a router, placement is key and depends somewhat on the layout of
the house. This page
<http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1114/%7E/improving-wireless-range%3A-overview>
from Netgear has some helpful generally applicable tips. I've also had
good experience with their routers. I would look for any router with
MIMO capabilities (dual transmitters on a single band) since it should
increase overall speed even when some of those distant computers force
the router to reduce transmission speeds.

Finally, if it's not practical to put the cable/router centrally, there
are repeaters/extenders. I've used the ASUS RT-N10
<http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN10/> (actually a router) which has a
very easy-to-use setup wizard. Placed somewhere towards the edge of
range, it takes about 3-4 clicks to configure it to extend your existing
network. I used one about a year ago for a client in my area, replacing
a purpose-built extender that 3 different computer professionals
couldn't get working.
