A few years ago, I made two such stands and they worked great.
You need a scissor type car jack and two pieces of three quarter inch plywood;
one for a base and other for the top. You'll have to find a way to attach
them. I just drilled holes and used quarter inch diameter bolts.
There are different kinds of jacks so you may want to look at a few before
settling on a particular one. Mine has a removable handle so it doesn't get in the way.
Some don't provide a solid platform to attach the boards.

I'm currently out of the country and all my stuff is packed away so I can't
show them and don't have pictures, sorry.

I got my jacks from Jaws Auto Recycling in Westhampton; they allowed me to
hunt through the cars. I think I paid just a few dollars for each.

BTW, I've also used mine to hold up kitchen cabinets and microwaves during
installation and removal.
