Hi Hidden-techies,

A friend and I are starting up a new web publication which will encourage a more humanistic relationship with and conscientious adoption of technology, exploring the downsides and risks that are often not discussed. It’s called The Technoskeptic. Yes, we are aware of the irony of launching this as a blog. But we are not against all technology. We love technology when it makes the world a better place and we hate it when it reduces our humanity. There are thousands of voices pressing for new technology, so we will be the one saying “Hold on a sec…” We urge reflection, caution, and moderation.

What we are looking for is someone who is available on an as-needed basis for a few hours of work here and there. The skeleton for the blog is currently on Wix (although it can be moved if necessary--which may be the case in order to meet the requirements of the paragraph below). The goal is to do as much of the design and content managment ourselves as we can. But we will want to add functionality to the site: generate ad revenue, do SEO, host media, accept donations, take subscriptions, and do light e-commerce. Some of these things will be modules built-in to Wix (or whichever platform is recommended) but we will need assistance.

Importantly, we have unique needs given the mission of the blog which will make the job more difficult: we have to avoid third-party tracking, particular services like Facebook and Amazon, and other pitfalls which run counter to our philosophy. We need someone ideally who gets what we’re trying to do and will consider these constraints a fun challenge rather than try to convince us that we’re crazy. Integrity is the goal here. Thus we need someone fluent in what those risks are and who is knowledgeable about what the best options are so that we can achieve our goals with minimum expenses. This person will ostensibly bill us an hourly rate, and be able to give rough estimates of how many hours various tasks might take.

I’d love to sit down with this person (or, if the job encompasses different skills, more than one person) and be able to strategize about what we might need for the year and come up with a rough cost estimate so I can create a ballpark budget.

If you’re interested, please get in touch at mo at thetechnoskeptic.com

Thanks!
Mo
