[Hidden-tech] tethering a mobile phone to make it a modem or hotspot

What works and how will depend on you phone, carrier and data plan.

I use Android and the following applies only to that platform.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Android phone on Verizon. It was bought out
of contract which allowed me to keep my old plan with unlimited data.
I've found FoxFi completely reliable for tethering on both this phone
and on my previous Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

FoxFi does not require rooting. Although my phones are rooted, I used
FoxFi on each before rooting and can verify that it works as well in
either case, even though the developer warns that it is only tested on
unrooted phones and might not work after rooting.

FoxFi is available on the Play Store for free, but the free version only
keeps a connection alive for a few minutes before requiring you to
reconnect. You can purchase a PDANet+ key from within the app for
$14.99 (Currently on sale for $7.99) that will unlock the complete
functionality. I would suggest trying the free version for a while to
make sure it works on your phone before committing to the license key.

If you use an iPhone, you'll have to ask someone else.
