Hi George, By boot and crash, I am guessing it is in a PC? Or do you mean boot and crash, the drive "spins" [boot] and then stops [crash]. I do not know how savvy you are, so take no offense please. If the drive is operating [turns on and spins, no crash], you won't need it to boot it. You could turn it into an external hard and possibly retrieve the data. The caveat is the drive has to be operational, it does not have to be bootable. View this this link or search "universal drive adapter": http://www.apricorn.com/products/notebook-hard-drive-upgrade-kits/drivewire-ide-pata-sata-to-usb-hdd-adapter.html?gclid=CP7ggp-2sroCFeyt4godPkgANA Unfortunately if the drive is not operational, then a data recovery service is needed and normally they are hundreds of dollars. Many years ago I used, OnTrack Data Recovery and the cost was around $600.00. It is not an inexpensive service and there are no guarantees either; it is usually a best effort. What is the data worth? Therein lies the rub. I hope this was helpful.
