Assuming that you're referring to an 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade, I've done one and
found that it went well. Although much maligned for its tiled interface,
8.* has been, for me, a good OS, slightly faster that 7 on the same
hardware.
Upgrading from XP directly to 8.*, as far as I know, isn't supported.
According to this page - http://goo.gl/bjRw2 - you'll do a clean
installation of Windows 8 and then be on your own to move files and find
compatible programs.
