[Hidden-tech] Product label printer experience?

Any bright ideas for doing low volume, professional looking product
labels? Professional printing gives great results, but low volumes are
incredibly expensive. There are $1,000 label printers on the market
that promise great flexibility, even somewhat customer-specific custom
labels, but do they work ok? are they just as expensive in ink and
paper?

Obviously, if somebody has a setup and would be willing to rent some
capacity to try this out, please let me know.
