For those who are interested in how I worked this out:

When I plugged the phone in to the Mac it did not recognize it as
Stacy's iPhone - only a generic iPhone with no data. No- I couldn't sync
the phone b/c of this (& I have yet to restore to factory settings.) The
Mac did not recognize the phone as an external drive/device that I could
manually extract the pics. Image Capture saw the image files but
couldn't download. The Mac install of Dropbox offered to download the
pics from the phone, but it couldn't start the procedure.

What DID work was wirelessly uploading the pics en-mass to Dropbox via
the Dropbox iPhone app and then moving them into my local Mac directory.
I never have uploaded a thing to Dropbox from the phone, only from the
Mac for viewing on the phone, so I didn't think of this. Thanks for the
recommendation!

Still unsure what will happen to my songs when I restore settings to
factory baseline, but will see. At any rate, I pre-ordered my 5 today.
Now I wonder how I'll get all those apps over to the new phone while
still using the 3GS as the music iPod. 2 iTunes account, I imagine... We
will see in 2 weeks!

You folks are great! Have a wonderful weekend.

Stacy
