I've been having a terrible time finding information for what are the repercussions to getting a TIN - Taxpayer ID Number for a small club. I am president of a model airplane club up in Turners. We've been around for 35 years and in all this time have maintained a bank account with just a couple thousand in it. Unfortunately due to changes in banking laws, I was told that we must have a taxpayer ID number attached to the bank accounts. So my question is this: I was told by an accountant that I'll have to get a Form 990 and file for non-profit status, and then have to file a Schedule A every year. Is there some way around this OTHER THAN ATTACHING MY OWN SS# TO IT so that I can get a TIN and not have to file taxes? I don't want to accrue the accountant fee and the filing fees and the time to prepare it every year. What are other clubs you belong to doing?
