[Hidden-tech] Seeking opinions: GAW.com highspeed internet

GAW offers radio-wave-based fixed wireless service. I can't speak to their
customer service, but I know from our experience in Warwick that all fixed
wireless is dependent on getting a good line-of-sight or near-line-of-sight
with the transmitter. If you have a good strong signal, it will be reliable
and not affected by weather. If there are trees in the way, strong wind as
well as other weather may be a problem. Also, radio signals can bounce
oddly, so sometimes a place with no line-of-sight may get a good signal and
the only way to really tell is to test with the equipment you'd be using.

The reason for their installation/signal testing policy is that the most
time-consuming aspect of installation is finding a spot where you'll get a
good signal and locking the subsciber module onto the signal. It just
doesn't make sense for them financially to send a skilled technician out to
your house if you're not serious about subscribing, or haven't made up your
mind.

If you're thinking about wireless in Wendell, you should also consider
AccessPlus, which provides wireless service in Wendell. In any case, you'll
want fiber when WiredWest brings it to Wendell, so try not to sign a
contract for more than 18 months!

** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area.
** If you did, we all thank you.

Hi Lisa,

If you search "GAW internet" here on HT, you'll see a few previous
discussions about it. My overall impression from what I remember was
that it depends where you're located, as I believe they work off
towers, not cable. So, weather will affect it, too. But give a read
from July 2011, and a few other threads.

Good luck,
Deb
