[Hidden-tech] font for mac os

I didn't think I had anything useful to add to this discussion but
your classifying Helvetica 65 as obscure caught my attention. It is
one of the original forms of Helvetica--the "65" weight was, I
believe, originally part of the engineering of the font called
Univers, which was the new thing when I was learning my trade as a
free-lancer in New York in the 70's. (Anybody on this list remember
when we worked on drawing tables and sent out for type in galleys?)
One of the problems now with Helvetica is that there are usually
versions of it in various configurations of system fonts and it's easy
to get a conflict. I have tried to use HelveticaNeue, which has all
the weights you would want, including some obliques, when I get a file
that calls for one of the other helveticas. If you have Helvetica
Neue, or another kind of Helvetica Bold, you should try running a test
comparison for weight and size with the 65 in the file you are trying
to match. It might work just as well and you wouldn't have to buy
anything.
But I do agree with Todd that pirated fonts, even if you don't count
the ethical questions, are disasters waiting to happen and should be
avoided. If it looks like Helvetica but is called something else,
don't go there. So many people don't realize that fonts are software
-- instead of getting cranky that the old ones stop working it's
better to consider occasionally replacing your older fonts as part of
the cost of keeping your system running smoothly. Buy the open type
format whenever it's available.
If you shop around you can find good prices from reputable font
suppliers and it's well worth it. I recommend Identifont.com as a
place to start. They don't sell fonts themselves but they will help
you find fonts in their data base and then point you to a list of
suppliers so you can do the cost comparison and decide where to buy
it. They also have a help line where you can send them a type sample
and they will tell you the name of the font you're trying to match.
Also, recently they helped me find some obscure symbol fonts I was
looking for.
	Lynne
