[Hidden-tech] Alternative to GoDaddy Hosting

A lot depends on your budget and expectations for level of service. I've heard good things about Gaia Host. They are a local company and reportedly great to work with. However, there pricing is, understandably, higher than the usual big far-away operations. If you are looking for something that is a step up from Go Daddy but not at the level of Gaia Host I have had good luck with Arvixe.

If you are migrating from one account with cPanel to another account with cPanel you can simple back up the entire site using the cPanel interface, upload the backup to the new host and have them un-zip it. Then you just need to change the nameserver settings with your registrar (I use Dotster and highly recommend keeping the domain name registration separate from the hosting). It can take up to 72 hours for the change to propagate across the Internet. So, for that time period you will probably want to keep both sites up.

Email can be the biggest challenge since it is quite possible for email to get left at the old site if it gets sent there by one server somewhere while the intended recipient has already been shifted to the new server for email. I always make it a practice to go to the old site and make sure there is no unread email left in the accounts there.

Of course if you have a very active interactive website you will need to get much more precise in your planning for how to handle the database migration so you don't end up with lost or duplicate data, but if you are hosting the sites on Go Daddy I doubt you have that sort of website.

Bruce

Subject: [Hidden-tech] Alternative to GoDaddy Hosting

Friends,

For a variety of reasons, I'd very much like to get rid of GoDaddy and move my several domains to a new host. And soon!

I'd love to get any suggestions as to web hosts you've had good experiences with, as well as any tips for making this migration as painless as possible.

Many thanks,

Ken
