[Hidden-tech] home office deduction question

I agree with Annamarie. I've been taking a home office deduction for 20 years, which is exactly how long I have had my office in my home. There is a very simple test for suitability (at least on TurboTax), you check the boxes truthfully, and it will tell you if you qualify.

I have never heard about this impacting the real estate value. I have had my office in three different houses, and in each case the office had been a bedroom, and likely will be a bedroom again (or, in fact, an office). If the office in your home is, indeed, your principal place of business, why does anyone think it would not be a good idea to claim it?

  Hi Tom,

Huh? Why ever would you NOT claim home office if it is in fact your only office? That's the caveat. If you have an office elsewhere then it gets dicey. But if it's your only place of business.... ?

I've been deducting mine for about 15 years.. I'm always honest about the square footage and the percentage thereof of utilities, home maintenance and repair for my house that I can deduct as part of my office.

I can't imagine how a home office would affect the value of the physical building. Maybe someone knows something I don't know...

    Hi fellow work-at-homeers,

Is there a down-side to claiming a home office space as a tax deduction?

Specifically wondering how it affects the value of our home over time?

our accountant has suggested that it's not always a good idea... but we can't figure out her reasoning & she'll charge us more for giving us a clearer answer...

any info would be greatly appreciated.
