Here's another approach. Work with what the teen already likes and 
find "adult" apps that are used for that body of knowledge.

We have a teen who is really into nature. He now has animal track 
apps (send him outdoors after a snowstorm with that app) and one for 
the iPad where you take a photo of a leaf and it will identify the 
tree for you. Also gps tracking apps.
