*Broadband Institute fiber-optic network update meeting today*** The Massachusetts Broadband Institute will host a "community meeting" at 6 p.m. today in Greenfield Community College's Sloan Theater to offer an update on the fiber-optic network it is building to provide broadband Internet to unserved parts of north central and western Massachusetts. The MassBroadband 123 initiative launched this summer is designed to expand high-speed Internet access to more than 120 communities across the region. The 1½-hour meeting at the main GCC campus will provide the latest information on last-mile strategies to connect broadband to homes and businesses, as well as an update from Axia, the network operator for MassBroadband 123. MBI will discuss connecting "community anchor" institutions such as libraries, schools, health-care and public-safety entities. The meeting will also highlight grant opportunities for small businesses interested in integrating broadband use and computer ownership into their organizations.
