[Hidden-tech] alternatives to Ning

A client of mine is going to need a Ning site or better, and I'm  
wondering if there's an alternative among the competitors that has  
emerged as a better platform that looks and works better. A reasonable  
monthly subscription fee is okay, so it doesn't have to be free. Needs  
to include all the usual: user profiles, discussions, etc.

Also, is there someone around here who has built a lot of Ning sites?
