For years, I've used 3G using a tethered standard nokia handset traveling Amtrak 
to NYC and other places around the country.  Depends on the speed of the train, 
but connectivity is pretty decent until you hit areas where mobile phone 
coverage is not good (such as tunnels on the way to NYC).

So a mifi hotspot right into your laptop would work or any tethered 4G phone 
would work fine for a trip to NYC.  You might want to keep it secure though, so 
others are leaching off your connection.
