[Hidden-tech] Online Backup Revisited

I am also on a 30 day trial of CrashPlan- seems very straightforward ( and I'm not that tech savvy)- and came highly recommended- plus very affordable.  Wish I understood a little more how this all works but I lost alot of data using a portable harddrive ( WD for macs- but an older one because I didn't understand the software well enough)- so I'm hoping this will be enough. Good luck. Sharon

I've been considering Crash Plan as well. They received top marks from Macworld.
Is anyone running two different online backup systems? Call me paranoid, but I'm considering it.

Some discussions have been focusing on online backup systems recently with the value of Trend Micro’s system being touted.  For a limited time, as a loss leader, they offered unlimited online backup for $30, which moved to $60 shortly thereafter, as they said it would.  However, when looking at this system yesterday, they’ve moved to a less attractive three tiered system:  20GB for $4050GB for $90100GB for $150  While there are some attractive features of this system, I would have to say that it gets pretty pricey on a per-machine basis.  This makes Carbonite a whole lot more attractive at $55 per year for unlimited backups.  Of course a backup is only as good as its restore, so you have to keep an eye on whatever you wind up doing (for the record, I had my laptop stolen a couple of years ago and was able to recover the whole thing via Carbonite).  I have also found another online backup system that I’m running on trial right now called
CrashPlan that offers both a limited free service (it looks as though it’s mostly a local backup) as well as both a limited (10GB for $25) and an  unlimited paid service ($50 per year).  Besides some interesting features (backing up to a friend’s offsite computer, for example), they also offer an unlimited multiple machine subscription (between 2 to 10 machines) for $120 per year.  This is very attractive for anyone with three or more machines that they want to back up.  I just thought I’d follow up with this, as it’s been a “hot topic” for some time now.  Thanks,Frank  <image003.jpg>When not just ANY geek will do!
