Then I wouldn't.  It's just as much work as doing something that will guarantee that you get paid, but there is only a chance that it will pan out.  I'd spend the time looking for actual contracts.  I think the client get more value out of it anyways, because they'll have more input and you'll know more about what they want through the interaction.
