Hey all, Just caught this post. I would add these thoughts: For a MacBook / IMac / Computer-based recording system: it's best to have your audio software reside on your system-drive and your audio go to an external drive. It's an easy setup through your audio software preferences & you'll get much better performance and won't tax your host computer. Another thought - invest in the finest stereo microphone you can afford (along with a shockmount & long, high-quality cable) and record computer-based (since you already have the machinery to go right to an audio recording/editing platform) , or using the Zoom/Sony option and use it as a recording device only, bypassing the internal mics. There are lots of options, no matter which way you go. You can find the gear online, at places like bhphoto.com , etc. Equipment aside, it's a lot of fun and good for the soul, too! I found the Zooms baffling to use, and traded my Zoom H-4 in within weeks of purchase for the Sony D-50. > > > > > on 6/29/11 8:26 AM, Duane Dale at duane.dale at gmail.com wrote: > > ** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. > ** If you did, we all thank you. > > > You might be satisfied with the Zoom H1 recorder ($100, or $130 with a kit of accessories including a windscreen). I've got one and it's plenty adequate for spoken word and even mid-quality music. > > It'll function as a stand-alone digital recorder, > or as a remote microphone for using a separate recorder (or a computer as a recorder) -- giving preamplified output for longer cable runs, I think, > or it can receive input from a separate microphone (such as a shotgun mic, for instance). Two recording modes (wav or mp3), wide choice of bit rates, 2GB + additional micro-SD takes at least an 8GB, which gives 100+ hours of mp3 recording. > > An example of a higher-end counterpart would be Sony PCM-D50 at $500, and Zoom makes some higher-priced ones too, but Zoom H1 seems like a very good value if it the quality suits you. > > -- Duane Dale > > On Tue, Jun 28, 2011 at 1:02 PM, <donna at blazey.com> wrote: > ** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. > ** If you did, we all thank you. > > > > Hi, I'm looking for some recording advice. > > I have a wonderful variety of song birds off my deck. How would I go about recording them? I have no experience in this area, but I figure there must be a way to get a "decent" recording... maybe? Just for my own use. > > 1.
