Thanks for the valuable advice and tips from all respondents. It seems that
looking to save a little money monthly world be penny wise and pound foolish
in this particular circumstance.

Verizon is the local phone company, in that they own the local wired
infrastructure.  There are several CLACs, but they all have to lease
access to Verizon's equipment.  Verizon is known for screwing with the
CLACs (there was a well known court case that went all the way to the
Supreme Court), so while some the CLACs *might* offer a *slightly*
better deal than Verizon, you should know that you might be *more*
likely to get a service interuption.  This might not be good idea with a
home alarm...
