Hi Greg,

Which version of Photoshop are you using? Masking is a bit different in Photoshop CS5 than CS3 or CS4. Easier I think — especially to mask hair and other fine details — but much different than using the extraction filter in earlier versions. If you feel more comfortable with the extraction filter, I believe it's still available for download from Adobe.

If you have CS5, you can learn more about masking here: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/masking-basics-in-photoshop-cs5/

Also, if you go to the main page for this show, you'll find other video tutorials: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/.

There are a bunch of tutorials on the web — just search for "photoshop mask hair" or "photoshop extraction" — you'll get a bunch of results.

I did the same thing you're doing a few weeks ago for a marketing piece I was designing, so if you'd like to talk with me I'm happy to go over what I did.

Best,
Jason
