I second Ron's suggestion. Have the editors work on the copy first. Then send it to the art director for layout and have the copy editors give it a final read-through in Acrobat. Spring for Acrobat Pro so the CEs can make corrections and notations.  It's what I do for _Copyediting_ - the final read-through and notations - and it seems to work quite well.
