Jeanne, I would recommend creating another account, name it "Admin" or "User", making sure that it is an administrator. Log out of your account, log into that one, then you can delete your account and all associated files. Be sure to pass along any applicable password on that new account, and you're all set. (You cannot change the 'short name' of a Mac OS X account once created.)
