[Hidden-tech] How do you take photo's to make into glace prints ?

I have done this a few times. I have done it with a large scanner and
with a camera, depending on the work.

If you can not scan in one piece, or the medium is unsuitable for
scanning (ie oil paints that might smudge as they take 200000 years to
dry) then a photo can produce fabulous prints. You definitely want an
SLR/high quality camera, if possible. Some of the point and shoots
may take high res/large size photos now, but in general the quality of
the image is not as good as even a low end SLR like a Canon Rebel.
However, digital is fine. There is certainly no need for
film/scanning. The most challenging aspect of shooting the photos is
to avoid an glare or light on the images that alter their appearance
in the photo. Using umbrellas or other means of using indirect light
is best, if possible. You also want to consider the type of lights
you are using in relation to the colors of the art, as they will/can
alter it. This could be corrected later in photoshop though, if you
know how.

As for scanning, normally this is only for smaller work, though I have
scanned paintings in pieces before and then assembled them in
photoshop. I made sure that there was a decent overlap on the scans
and then just laid them together in photoshop and clipped/aligned as
needed. However, the paintings I was working with were acrylics, so
they had very little volume (paint that stood far off the canvas) and
were most certainly 100%, through and through dry, which can often be
hard to say for oils and I would be reluctant to lay some oil
paintings face down on anything.

Either way you do it you want to take time in Photoshop to compare the
images to the original

How big are the paintings you will be working with? How many are
there? I would consider shooting the images for you, depending on the
details.

There are a lot of places you can print. I can recommend a few once
you tell me some more info about sizes & total quantities.

Also, "Giclee" (meaning 'spray') is just a fancy term for a high
quality inkjet print. :) Sounds really good though, right?

Hope this helps.

All the best
Sarah
