[Hidden-tech] web hosting suggestions

GoDaddy is one of the worst hosts out there for Joomla. They are insecure
(sites are hacked there all the time), plus they can be slow as can be. We
had one client who complained of a site so slow he couldn't use it, and he
asked us to go over the site and "optimize it for speed". We moved him from
GoDaddy to Rochen and that's all we needed to do.

(On a personal note, I dislike GoDaddy's marketing, so I don't use them
anyway.)

Backups are one of the most important aspects of your web hosting. Be sure
to talk with the host about policies. At a minimum, you want a daily backup
and a weekly backup. If the daily fails, you can go to the weekly. Ideally
you can keep a few more than that (which you can with Rochen).

Make sure the backups are actually available to you. All hosts do backups --
but some do them for their own purposes only, such as when the server
catches fire or other Bad Things happen. Ask the host whether they can roll
back your site if needed, and how fast they can make that happen.

On a dynamic site -- whether that's Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, or any other
CMS -- people are making changes, purchasing things in the shopping cart,
making comments on the blog, and so forth. Data is constantly being
generated that is relevant to the site owner. If the site fails, you may be
so lucky as to have a copy of the site on your hard drive -- but it's likely
you'll be missing data. The question is how much data you're missing and how
critical that is to the client.

Your web host's backups will save you one day. It's only a question of when.
Don't just assume those backups are there if you need them.
