Hi Deborah -

There's one other avenue that doesn't yet seem explored. While SmallDog (in Waitsfield, VT) is a reliable retailer of used Macs, they are in high demand and go as quickly as they appear. Their warranty on refurbished Macs from Apple are one-year, on used Macs checked out on the bench is 90 days I think. Other folks specialise in used, and hence has more in stock.

If you want to actually shop through multiple models of lightly older PowerBooks and the occasional MacBook try also DVwarehouse. They also have a 90-day bench warranty on all Macs sold after full check out. Some of their later PowerBooks are fairly hot-rodded, and are running for around $300-500. You can get up to 1.87 and occasionally 2 GHz with bells & whistles, and I had found that speed perfectly adequate for editing FinalCut on my (just recently fried) older PowerBook, until I wanted to edit HD... for which you really need 2.2GHz or faster.

But the price and shopping range may be attractive.

Will the prices on MacBooks be lower before the holidays or after, and are there any deals to be had? I know some of you gobble up this kind of info and find it interesting to follow.
