The Office of Research Development at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking applicants for a Proposal Development Specialist.

General Statement of Duties:  Under the direction of the Director of Research Development, the Proposal Development Specialist produces, manages, and implements a suite of programs and services geared to increase the competitiveness of proposals for extramural funding with an emphasis on large-scale, interdisciplinary opportunities focusing on research development in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences.  The position involves significant contact with University administrators, faculty on and off campus, funding agency program directors, state and federal officials, and business executives.  The Proposal Development Specialist works cooperatively with other members of the Research Development team on capacity-building programs, trainings, and workshops for faculty investigators and performs critical analysis of funding opportunity announcements and requests for proposals.

Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, or related field.  Master's degree or Ph.D. highly desired.  More than five years of experience in research development, research administration, or a closely allied field, preferably with a comparable organization.  Experience writing, managing, or administering large federal grants, proposals and reports, or cooperative agreements for multifaceted research programs is desired.  Familiarity with the rules and regulations of major research sponsors or related experience.  Evidence of successfully developing professional relationships with research funding entities is desired.  Demonstrated track record of successful project management preferably in an academic or professional research environment.  Familiarity with university research and education programs is also desired.  Must have the presence, interpersonal skills, and technical vocabulary to work confidently and effectively with campus faculty, staff, University administrators, government, industrial representatives, and students.  Persuasive team player, excellent facilitator and collaborator, and passionate about playing an important role in the campus-wide campaign to establish UMass Amherst among the very best public research universities in the country.  Ability to simultaneously work across multiple projects in a fast-paced environment where priorities change in response to external needs and opportunities.  Demonstrated scientific understanding and knowledge of research budgeting and experience formulating and managing complex budgets.  Exceptional written and oral communication skills.  Particular emphasis on the ability to accurately translate technical or scholarly information into accessible and persuasive language.  Experience with PC software applications and web development tools.  Evening or weekend work, as well as travel, are necessary in this position, as dictated in response to external funding opportunities.

The Hiring Salary Range is $51,500 - $64,300.  The Normal Salary Range is $51,500 - $57,900.  The University also offers an attractive benefits package.
