As an iPhone user, I can say the AT&T does have the coverage. But they don't have the bandwidth. Their network gets congested sometimes to the point of not being able to use my phone for much of anything. It's very frustrating. As a former Verizon customer, I know they have good coverage too, for now. My guess is that as smartphones (like the Android) begin to take over more of their customer base they will experience the same issues at AT&T is...namely, too much demand on their network.
