I use MicroEmacs 3.10 under Linux, in a plain *old school* XAW flavored X-Term (traditional UNIX x-term). I don't use an IDE. I *hate* colorful text editors (I don't like syntax highlighting -- it is distracting). Mono font, uncolored text editor. No menus, strictly keyboard interface. I use automake, autoconf, gnu make, standard GNU toolchain (gcc, binutils), etc. in another x-term as my build tools. I code mostly in Tcl/Tk (high-level, cross-platform, GUI) and C/C++ (low-level OS netural libraries). I also use LaTeX for documentation (again using MicroEmacs 3.10 for editing the text). I am male, 57, and have used computers since I was 16 (DTSS on Model 33 and 35 terminals) and have *never* use MS-Windows, ever -- I went straight from Vax/VMS (via VT100/H19/VT220 to VaxStation 2000/3000) to UNIX (Ultrix (DECStations), SunOS (SparcStations), Irix (SGIs), OSF (AlphaStation)) to Linux (random commodity PCs), completely skipping both MS-Windows. > > --Just to be clear, I'm not asking for a recommendation, but I am > hoping that the thread will help to open up options for myself and > others.
