[Hidden-tech] lacie extreme disk error messages

Tom -

First let me say that as nice as the Lacie designs are, I have had clients
with problems with Lacie units in the past. More so than any Seagate,
Western Digital or Buffalo, for example. So it is not unprecedented that
you should be having some issues.

Second, is this a backup disk? If so it should, *in theory*, be redundant
with the data on your Mac. Therefore, the data is expendable and I would
recommend getting a heartier unit.

If this *does* contain unique data, I would open up the box and try to drop
the drive into a hard drive enclosure to see if you can read it. It could
be that the controller in the Lacie is bad, but that the drive is fine.
Placing it into a fresh external enclosure would test this theory and
revive the drive in the process, should this be the case.

If that doesn't work, your recourse is limited to a data recovery company.
This is *very* costly, however (probably between $500 to $1500), but if it
works, you've got your data back.

Just my thoughts.

Frank
