I¹ve had repeated difficulties with Time Machine backups being done to an external USB drive (OWC dual disk drive in my case). The backup works fine for a while and then after a month or two eventually corrupts to the point where Disk Utility can¹t repair it. Once Disk Utility gives you the errors you are getting, you only choices are to try another utility such as Disk Warrior or re-format the drive and restart you Time Machine backup loosing all the incremental backups you currently have stored. In the past Disk Warrior has occasionally been able to fix things that DU doesn¹t but I don¹t have the most recent version and so can¹t speak directly to it. The erase and start over option is the safest. As Alex Lindsay of PixelCorp and MacBreak says with regard to computer data and backups, ³if it doesn¹t exist in three places, then it doesn¹t exist², meaning the original and two backups makes three. I use Time Machine to one drive, periodic backup of the entire disk image to a separate drive, and Carbonite. Carbonite is OK, but it¹s pretty slow on the upload. There are reportedly better/faster services and I will probably switch when my year subscription is up.
