[Hidden-tech] iPod shuffle - talking books?

Hi Robin,

Leaving the risks/merits of the survey = free iPod Shuffle equation out of the discussion, here's what I can tell you about the Shuffle and your question about talking books.

The family of iPod devices are used by basically "marrying" them to an iTunes library, maintained on one computer (mac or pc). On that computer, you can download audio books from the internet (from audible.com, as well as other providers). Once they are purchased and in your iTunes library, you can create a playlist for the audio book, and then sync that playlist to your Shuffle, by connecting it via USB and clicking Sync within iTunes—you'll need a preference set in the Shuffle's preferences tabs within iTunes, where you have to choose to sync that particular playlist. There are resources online (and within hidden-tech of course) for doing all of this.

Once the audio content is synced (essentially, transferred) to your new shuffle, you can opt to simply play the tracks (chapter 1, chapter 2 and so on) in chronological order, and listen to your talking book; done. You don't need to shuffle the content on your Shuffle, per se; it's just that you can.

If you are imagining that you'd be able to "browse" Apple's iBooks store, or anything like that, you'd need to have an iPod Nano(?), iPod touch, or an iPhone for that, but as for the Shuffle and your question.... yes, you can.

1. Download audio book content from internet site into iTunes on Mac or PC.
2. Create playlist of the "chapters" of audio, in order
3. Sync playlist to iPod Shuffle
4. Enjoy
Ad Nauseam: Rinse/repeat

Good luck!
