[Hidden-tech] DSL & Voip - THREAD DRIFT - now about the Cloud

First of all - (as webmaster) - there will be no more postings allowed
with Subject: DSL & Viop that are about 'the cloud'
PLEASE be considerate and if you shift the discussion or see a major
shift - change the subject or add formerly or now ....

As for using the cloud, I both agree and disagree -- read the guarantee
even if you are only a service
user or renter -- if you are relying on a service - insist they tell you
the details.

And use common sense about backups - I have both cloud backups and local
servers and lately My book/world and Sharespace machines.
For those that don't have the luxury (or need) for their own backup
servers, using the cloud services are much better
then the risk of machines dying.

As for using cloud services - we have had dozens of servers (technically
instances) in the cloud for almost 2 years now,
and we love it -- yes it's different, and yes there are risks - but
having had many physical server crashes and disks die
I can tell you being able to run up a replacement machine in a few
minutes is a dream comparing with having to switch a drive out
at a colo.

Also, for those with real (or imaginary) security issues -- we have a
number of private cloud configurations
and find they provide much better management, and instance security then
regular web server configurations,
in fact, the new Hidden-tech web site is on our private cloud at Crocker,

Rich
