Simple. Either the wireless access point hasn't enough power, or it is slightly off frequency. I have a IBM T43, and access point that are slightly off frequency from each other, if I let the laptop run on battery power. There is another "option," Use 802.11b. Not g, n, or t. Faster speed always means less range. If someone gets the same range is had with no increase in power, they are destined for a trip to Sweden in December to meet with the king. Yes, off frequency issues aside, there is absolutely no reason for WiFi not to penetrate more than 3 floors in a wood frame house. With several concrete floors there can be a problem.
